Boise Capital Soccer Club Medical Information

Medical Team

Dr. Jim Johnston and the Boise Orthopedic Clinic provide medical care and recommendations to members of the Boise Capital Soccer Club. They have been providing this service for over ten years, and we are very fortunate to have them. Their service and dedication to BCSC players and families is greatly appreciated!

Dr. Jim Johnston is a sports medicine fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon. He has been a team physician for Boise State University, the Steelheads hockey team, and the Stampede basketball team. He is also the team physicial for Meridian High School. While being interested in many sports, he enjoys playing on a men's league soccer team.

Free Sports Injury Evaluations

Dr. Johnston and the Boise Orthopedic Clinic ("BOC") offer free injury evaluations to BCSC athletes. In many cases, this involves calling to set up a time you can stop by BOC's office or Dr. Johnston can stop by the BCSC Complex. Most times, this can be done within 24 hours. There may be a charge if x-rays or supplies are required. BOC may also be contacted by pager or cell phone on weekends and evenings for emergency situations. BOC also provides Capitals with a trainer for travel events when three or more BCSC teams participate.

Hydration and Heat Illness Guidelines published by USSF

The popularity of soccer among American youth is at an all-time high. Nearly 14 million young athletes (13,832,000 ) under the age of 18 play soccer at elite and recreational levels in the United States.

The rapid growth of youth soccer participation in recent years, coupled with an increased need for qualified and certified coaches, has made ensuring the safety of youth soccer players more important than ever before. Moreover, new youth soccer research from the University of Connecticut and serious cases of heat illness in the past few years across a variety of sports has prompted the U.S. Soccer Federation to issue an updated version of its "Youth Soccer Heat Stress Guidelines." The aim is to help parents, young athletes and coaches understand one of the most common and most preventable sports injuries – heat-related illnesses, including dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

The following information and youth heat stress guidelines provide suggestions for preventing the potentially dangerous and sometimes deadly effects of playing in hot or humid conditions.
