Scholar-Athlete Series Update

Approximately 80 athletes and parents attended the 2009 Scholar-Athlete Series, which included presentations by Capitals Director Dave Chesler, Technical Director Ben Twigg, Technical Director Kim Holloway, and Assistant Technical Director Gavin Kempe.

Here is feedback from one BCSC parent on the Scholar-Athlete Series:

"I was just writing to let you know how impressed my husband was with what you presented...He felt that the club represents what he believes...You should really be commended on your presentation last night...Not only are you interested in creating an athlete, but also a well rounded individual. Thank you for all that you do to encourage our youth to be the best they can be."

The BCSC Technical Staff is excited to announce the fourth annual Scholar-Athlete Series.This program provides our athletes and parents with key information and an action plan designed to support the student-athlete as they prepare for a college student-athlete experience.

ALL 9TH THROUGH 11TH GRADE ATHLETES ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND. WE WELCOME PARENTS TO ATTEND SO YOU MAY UNDERSTAND AND SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S EFFORTS IN THIS PROCESS.

The key Scholar-Athlete Series elements are:

• Sequential planning (freshman-->senior): identifying the critical steps for college preparation.
• All presentations will incorporate scholastic as well as athletic program elements.
• Supporting written materials and publications will be provided.
• Identification of key resources.
• Presentations may include professionals in specific areas of college eligibility, admissions, financial aid, college coaches, and college athletes as available. 

The Scholar-Athlete Series will be facilitated and administered by the BCSC Technical Directors and guest speakers in specialty areas. Focus points of the Scholar-Athlete Series include:

• Scholar-Athlete Role and Responsibilities
  • Overview: Opportunity-Objectives-Obstacles
  • Parent Role and Responsibilities
  • Resume-Writing and Designing a Cover Letter
  • Research: Understanding Your Target Schools
• College Selection
  • What are the key variables?
  • Communication-Contact-Campus Visits
  • Contacts and Evaluations
• Admissions, Essays, and Eligibility
  • Identifying Standards and Developing a Plan to Achieve Your Goals (Academic + Athletic)
  • Completing the Process - Structuring an Action Plan
